"The internet loves this and the internet is never wrong!"
Rumi (Cho), Mira (Hong), and Zoey (Yoo) make the famous K-pop girl group HUNTR/X. They are also secretly demon hunters. For hundreds of years, groups of 3 women have served as demon hunters, protecting the world through song and battle. They are use both to charge the Honmoon barrier to keep the demons and their leader, Gwi-Ma (Byung-hun), cut off from the world.
After finishing their world tour, Mira and Zoey are excited to relax and eat junk food. Rumi can't wait to release their next signal "Golden", which they hope will turn the Honmoon gold and permanently seal the barrier. Their manager Bobby (Jeong) is thrilled with the early release and rushes to get their next big concert. But as they prepare, Rumi has problems with her voice.
Meanwhile Gwi-Ma is frustrated that none of his demons can take down the HUNTR/X. The demons, led by demon Jinu (Hyo-seop), form a K-pop boy band called Saja Boys to even the score. Can Rumi, Mira, and Zoey defeat the Saja Boys and save the world?
Sony Pictures Animation original film, released by Netflix.
The Good:
The animation is beautiful, it is vibrant and fun, with some anime elements. It has lots of personality.
The soundtrack is fun and infectious. The action is well-suited to the music. EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami provide the singing voices of Rumi, Mira and Zoey. Andrew Choi provides Jinu's singing voice.
The battle scenes are interesting and well choreographed.
The Bad:
The Saja Boys, other Jinu, do not have personality or names... they are defined by traits: Mystery, Romance, Baby, and Abby (always showing off his abs).
Other Comments:
-The story is by co-director Maggie Kang, who also served as a screenwriter alongside co-director Chris Appelhans, Danya Jimenez, and Hannah McMechan. It celebrates Korean culture, specifically K-pop.
-It is funny, but also packs an emotional punch.
-The girls are the maindraw, but Ken Jeong is hilarious as Bobby.
-Daniel Dae Kim also gets a fun turn as the over-the-top Healer Han.
-This film is fun and fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed it, enough to watch it twice over the course of 2 days.
